This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together resides a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the country for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
